Marriage
Who can be married here?
English law states that anyone of marriageable age who has not previously been married and who lives within the geographical boundaries of a parish is entitled to be married in their parish church.
That same entitlement extends to those who are baptized, worship in the church regularly, and are on the church’s electoral roll, regardless of where they live.
What about divorce?
If you or your partner has been married previously and has a former partner still living, then you would need first to have a conversation with Fr Brett about your circumstances. We don’t believe divorce is an automatic barrier to marriage: everyone should have the chance to make a fresh start and a new beginning, and marriages fail for all kinds of reasons. But the Church believes that marriage is ideally a life-long union. The Church of England’s guidelines suggest that for re-marriage in church, this new relationship should not have been the cause of the breakdown of a previous marriage, and that normally there should not have been more than one previous marriage for either partner. But do, please, contact Fr Brett to talk to him about your situation.
